Why Most Indian Households Use Too Much Detergent — And What It Does to Clothes

Ask most Indian households how much detergent they use per wash and the answer will be some version of "enough." There is no measurement involved. The cap from the bottle is filled, or a scoop is poured until it looks right, or the powder is added until suds form. The underlying assumption is that more detergent equals cleaner clothes.
This assumption is wrong — and it is costing fabric condition, causing skin irritation, and wasting both detergent and water.
Why overdosing became the norm
Detergent packaging in India is almost universally unhelpful on this point. The skin connection
Residual detergent on clothing is in direct and prolonged contact with skin. For most garments, this means hours of daily contact. Research in dermatology literature has linked residual surfactants on clothing — particularly sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and related compounds, which are standard components of most laundry detergents — to skin irritation in sensitised individuals.

What the right dose actually looks like
